In 40 years of reading, no book has had as much influence on me as Sexus, part one of Henry Miller's ribald, rambling autobiographical trilogy, based on his relationship with his wife June (here called Mara, then Mona). The events of the book center around his original meeting with Mara/Mona and from there spiral outwards in many directions, gathering in a wide variety of bizarre and loveable characters, and showcasing Miller's unparalleled ear for language and gift for description.Yes, there is plenty of sex in Sexus, more so in fact than in any other Miller work. Yes, much of it can be dismissed as misogynistic chest-beating. The sexual passages are not sensuous or romantic or even erotic; they are satirical and in most cases hysterically funny. While some readers will of course be put off by graphic sex of any kind, those with flexible tastes are in for some good laughs, as well as virtuoso displays of first rate writing talent."Dirty parts" aside, this vast ocean of a book tells a powerful story that is compulsively readable throughout. It is more accessible than the "Tropics" pieces, which are more surrealist and abstract; here Miller employs a much more straightforward narrative. This is probably one of the four or five most important works in English to be published in the 20th century (and is in many respects a repudiation of 19th century literature). Highly recommended for anyone with a halfway-open mind.

I happened upon this book in a very small Taipei bookstore. The number of contemporary books written in English was extremely limited and the selection was rather poor. But there was Sexus - and who hasn't heard of Henry Miller? I had never read a work by Miller. Intrigued, I took the book and read Sexus on the flight back to the States. I recommend the book to anyone with a strong curosity, a liking for frankly sexual material, and a most unique view of the world. I did not "love" the book, but I did find it intelllectually provocative, though definitely not sensuous. I am not particularly interested in reading Miller's other works, but I am glad I happened across this book in such an unlikely place and experienced the fasinating literary world of Mr. Miller. Not a fun book, at least for me, but everyone ought to give him a try once

This book changed my life. I discovered a soul mate in Henry Miller, someone with infinite creativity, a sense of the beauty of life, somebody who was prepared to live large. The book Sexus became a bible of sorts to me, a bible on how to live large, and with gusto. Whenever I'd lose my way in the world, I'd simply read a few pages from this book, and I'd feel marvelous, balanced, and inspired again... Henry Miller reminds me that life is short, hilarious, an adventure, and can be as wild and enchanting as we choose it to be.

Sexus was a great book - one of my favorites - but not for everyone. If you are secure, settled, and happy with your life, find a different classic to read. There are plenty out there and plenty more suited to your sensibilities. However, if you feel something weighing on you - something you can hardly express - read this book. Henry Miller will give word to all the fears you've ever had and - one by one - demonstrate how to overcome them. This book (this entire trilogy) is for those who feel misunderstood - for those who need reassurance that they're not alone. If you're not of this sort, don't bother. If you are, purchase this book now. I think you shall find a friend.

After a slow start, this book really gets going. Henry Miller reminds me of a somewhat more refined Charles Bukowski. The sex scenes are hot indeed, but even better are the passages where Miller comes across as an observer of life and art in general. At times the book may tend to become a little wordy, but it's still more than worthwile.

This book was not made for the meek at heart. Or maybe it was, to pull them out of the doldrums of their existence.(?)This is a book on how to live, and not just in the basic sense of the word. It has some of the most profound observations on being an artist I have encountered so far. If you are expecting a read of the erotic kind, well, you will find that also, but I found the observations on the artist and introspection so much more valuable. The more risquee parts are just interesting scenery to liven the ride.

Miller's Tropic of Cancer is page upon page of the outrageous, often sexual, adventures of the protagonist. He is carefree and unrestrained. In Sexus, there are plenty of outrageous acts, but Miller has begun to restrain himself a little. The book is also chock full of poetic philosophizing, some of which is cool, some of which is tedious nonsense.

It was the first time i encountered such a daring attitude of a writer. I recognized from the very beginnig that this book would be different. Miller gives e hard blow to the hipocrisy and fake moral standards set up by the society. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to see the real way of life, and try to adapt himself to a new lifestyle where he is in control of his life.
